La Otra Cocina is an oil painting I started a couple of years ago and returned to finish this year, layered with rainwater, acrylic, and oil. It's a meditation on Caribbean culture. Presented are several objects like a fruit bowl holding fruits such as papaya, guanábana, limoncillo, and jagua that sits alongside plantains and a game of dominoes, an ode to my grandfather, who loved the game. Together, these objects speak to a culture so many of us in the diaspora carry. The conch shell is a reminder to call on our ancestors for guidance, and in honor of the four directions of the universe.
